Dizzy Gillespie "Dizzy for president" - recorded live in Monterey 1963
On the closing number Dizzy brings out the singer Jon Hendricks to
launch the campaign song for the Dizzy Gillespie for President campaign.
The campaign really started when 200,000 black and white Americans marched
on Washington to support civil rights three weeks before Monterey. Dizzy
admitted the publicity stunt and humorous value of the idea, but he also
felt it could help promote some genuine change. “Anybody coulda made a
better President than the ones we had in those times, dilly-dallying about
protecting blacks in their exercise of their civil rights and carrying
on secret wars against people around the world.” Some things never change,
do they?
