Chick Corea-Jack de Johnette-Lee Konitz-Miroslav Vitous-Pat Metheny...
"The Song is you"
2CDs
recorded at the Woodstock Jazz Festival -Creative Music Studio 1981
September 19, 1981, in Woodstock, New York, was a cold, rainy day with
brief, sunny interludes. But phenomenal creative output despite stormy
weather delighted the 1,600 people who braved the wet and the cold. The
musicians appeared solo and in ensembles of up to nearly twenty players,
jazz legends with students, world-music practitioners with avant- gardists,
old friends reuniting, and new friends reaching into unexplored musical
realms. The double CD that results makes you a privileged witness of the
unique energy displayed for this day-long concert by some of the finest
improvisers of the era. The two CDs capture the day’s “superstar” performances
by Jack DeJohnette, Chick Corea, Miroslav Vitous,Lee Konitz, Anthony Braxton,
and Pat Metheny. These live sessions, which came at the conclusion of
a day rich with spontaneity and improvisational flavor, were truly the
icing on the festival’s cake. This recording, CD1, introduces the trio
of Jack, Chick, and Miroslav the core around which the other performers
swirl. It concludes with a total textural shift in a duet performance
by Chick and Lee. CD 2 presents these four players and adds Anthony Braxton
and Pat Metheny in quartet, quintet, and sextet settings.
